We serve over 100 firkins of Real Ale and Cider, comprised of over 50 British beers from England, Scotland, and Wales; and over 50 American beers, mostly from New England. All the beers are cask-conditioned, served by gravity or hand-pump.

Here are the American beers and ciders we served at NERAX 2011.


Not all casks are available at every session. To enhance your enjoyment, a beer will only be served when it has the correct clarity and carbonation level. Beers will drop bright at different rates due to a wide range of factors. Venting times to adjust the carbonation levels also vary. Thus some cask ales will be ready to serve before others and thus some casks as listed as being on the stillage will not served in some sessions. Though if a beer is listed as being on the stillage, and has been served earlier in the festival, it has a good chance of being served at the next session.

As the festival goes on, we do our best to indicate which beers will be available each session. Please note that the final decisions regarding which beers are in proper condition to be served are taken by the cellar team just before the start of the session.

Amherst Brewing Co. North Pleasant Pale Ale 13P 5.2 36 SAT-ON Golden in color. This beer has a wonderful biscuitlike malt flavor and mild hop finish. This cask is dry hopped with Fuggles as well.
Andrews Brewing Co. Pale Ale 1.052 4.8 FRI-ON
Has a moderate hop aroma with a medium malt aroma, often with a low to moderately strong caramel component and earthy tones. Medium-low to medium-high fruity esters. Deep copper in color with good to brilliant clarity and a low to moderate white to off-white head. Has a medium bitterness with supporting malt flavors evident. This ale has a medium-full body and finishes dry to medium-dry.
Avery Ellie's Brown Ale 1.056 5.5 17 SAT-ON This beautiful, deep russet brew has the sweet and somewhat nutty character of Adam Avery's late (1992-2002) Chocolate Lab, for which it is named. Crystal and chocolate malts give this beer a brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, while subtle hopping gives it an overall drinkability that's second to none, just like Ellie!
Bear Republic Nor Cal Ale 4.5 47 WED-ON
Nor Cal is an ale brewed in the tradition of an English session beer from the perspective of a Northern California Brewer. This ale has a well rounded malt bill featuring American and English Malts and then revved up with west coast hops.
Berkshire Brewing Steel Rail EPA 5.3 SAT-ON A light colored, medium bodied, full flavored American style Ale. Steel Rail E.P.A. is our flagship product that has a full malt flavor and is balanced with a pronounced hop flavor and bitterness. Specially hopped for this festival.
Boston Beer Oaked Red Ale 5.9 19 THU-ON
This beer has subtle earthy notes from traditional English hops and notes of oak that the beer was aged in. It has a sweet and malty flavor from the caramel malt finished off with a slight mocha and oak finish.
Bray's Brewpub Old Church Pale Ale 1.060 5.5 THU-ON
A malty pale ale with a fresh, flowery nose that reflects its dry-hopping. It is well balanced with Centennial hops for bittering and generous amounts of Cascade hops for flavor and aroma.
Brooklyn Brewery Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout 12P 4.5 WED-ON
Traditional dry stout dry hopped with east kent golding hops and aged for one month in a woodford reserve bourbon barrel. Has hints of vanilla and oak in addition to the classic dry roasted bitterness.
Butternuts Beer & Ale Dilly Dally 11P 3.6 32 THU-ON
Mild ale brewed with North American 2 row barley and English Crystal malt. Hopped with Columbus for bittering, Cascade and Liberty for flavor/aroma. Coined as a NYS Mild Ale this beer combines the "American" hop attributes with a session ale. Malt and hop balance with a dry finish. Cask hopped with Cascade hop pellets.
Calvary Marauder IPA 1.05 5.1 35 FRI-ON
Marauder IPA is an English IPA with Challenger hop aroma and mild hops characteristics from the Fuggles. This IPA is in the classic English IPA style with a warm copper color and considered an easy drinking IPA.
Cape Ann Brewing Co. Fisherman's Rock Porter 4.8 20 FRI-ON
A traditional English Brown Porter, Fisherman's Rock has a roasted malt aroma, a lightly burnt chocolate undertone with an understated bitterness to go with a medium body.
Cape Cod Beer Cape Cod Red 13.5 5.5 50 SAT-ON Smooth and Mellow: A well-balanced amber ale with caramel and toffee malt notes and a subtle spicy hop character “Nothing but smooth sailing with this North American Style Amber Ale. A well-balanced deep amber brew with a mouthful of malt flavor and just the right amount of hop character. The flagship of Cape Cod Beer, this beer won’t steer you wrong! ”
Cisco Brewers Moor Porter 9.9P 4 33 Not Expected A cask-hopped session strength version of Moor Porter.
Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet Black IPA 1.07 7 80 FRI-ON
Hoppy Feet has been lovingly crafted by combining Premium malt with lots of Amarillo and Columbus Hops. Grapefruit and Pine are balanced on the nose and on the palate by a nutty, dark chocolate, roasted backbone. The beer pours like a porter but drinks like an IPA for an incredibly pleasurable drinking experience.
Farnum Hill Ciders 110/SAT2 7.4 WED-ON This is NOT a finished cider, but the first racking of our first fermentation blend (of 23) of the 2010 crop. It contains over 75% bittersweet cider apple varieties, strong to Ellis Bitter and Ashton Bitter, followed by Yarlington Mill and Dabinett. It is slightly reductive and very low in acidity, with pronounced leathery bitterness and soft astringency. Those characteristics, combined with its notes of ripe (nearly overripe) orange, pineapple, mango and grapefruit, will make this 1300-gallon batch very useful for blending with more acidic varieties later in the year. It will probably find its way into either our Farmhouse or our Dooryard cider, sometime late in the summer.
Gardner Ale House Vienna Lager 1.049 5.2 25 SAT-ON This amber lager, named after the city in which the style originated, has a rich malt profile, low hop aroma, and an even, balanced bitterness. Its toasted malt flavor comes from a combination of 9 different malts, with Vienna and Munich malts dominating. German noble hops add enough bitterness to balance out the malt sweetness. We love this beer, and the judges agree!

Goose Island Goose Island IPA 15.7P 5.9 55 SAT-ON
This IPA is brewed using four different hop varieties, and is then generously dry hopped in the firkin. The result is a hop lover’s dream with a fruity aroma, set off by a dry malt middle, and long hop finish.
Gritty's Freeport 21 IPA 1.069 6.5 60 WED-ON
A blend of American hops with a British body utilizing English 2-Row Pale malts. This IPA starts with a hoppy aroma and taste; ending with a sweet finish. Munich and caramalts are used to give a golden hue. Hopping includes Cascade, Willamette, and Warrior.
Gritty's Portland Blue Porter 4.5 WED-ON Rob Griffin's first recipe at Gritty's is a delicious session Porter. It's definitely an American take on an English classic; pale malt and torrified wheat are the backbone of the grain bill, with a little bit of chocolate and black malt for color and flavor. Bowing to English standards, a little bit of roasted barley is added for a hint of smoke in the nose of the beer. Hopping includes Willamette, Fuggles, and Whitbread Goldings; Goldings leaf hops were used to create a hop tea for added flavor.
Harpoon Harpoon Oyster Stout 15.4P 5.5 35 WED-ON
We shuck oysters along with their liquor right into the boil of our 100BBL Oyster stout. It's got a big, malty toasty character and a dry roasted finish. Dry hopped with U.S. Goldings.
Harpoon 3C IPA 15.4P 5.9 42 SAT-ON
3C IPA: Our flagship IPA with all the balanced drinkable character that it's known for, along with a healthy dose of Coriander and Chinook and Centennial hops for added complexities in both aroma and flavor.
Haverhill Brewing Co.(The TAP) Well-hopped Helles 1.049 5.1 36 SAT-ON
German-style Helles lager with extra Saaz hops added towards the end of the boil and a generous amount more for dry-hop. Light, crisp, with a good hop bite. This beer will not be entirely bright (clear), which is as intended.
High and Mighty Beer Co High and Mighty XPA 5 Not Expected XPA (Extra Pale Ale) is an American classic. A hoppy session ale . . . relatively light and low in alcohol but packed with flavor. Old World English malts are paired with new American hop varieties, resulting in a superbly drinkable yet complex brew, ideal for evenings out at the pub or when entertaining at home. This beer has it all – enough hops to satisfy the most serious hophead, but enough malt to achieve a perfect balance.
John Harvard Brewpub (Cambridge) Newtowne Brown Ale 12.5P 5.2 35 WED-ON An American brown ale with a hop presence balanced by a sweet malt character with hints of roasted malt and notes of oak.
Lowell Beerworks London Special 11 P 4.5 40 FRI-ON Light copper colored Special Bitter. Biscuity malt character with a noticable hoppiness from UK Goldings and Styrians that finishes long and dry.
Magic Hat Blind Faith IPA 14.8P 6.2 60 FRI-ON
An ale of enlightenment created to aid in deciphering the puzzles along life's road, and to interpret signs in the voyages of the spirit. Blind Faith is an extremely well-balanced India Pale Ale with a crisp, refreshing hop bitterness and a deep malt body to match
Magnolia Pub Blue Bell Bitter 1.05 4.5 30 WED-ON
Extra Special Bitter brewed with floor-malted Maris Otter and crystal malts. All UK Goldings hops.
Marshall Wharf Brewing Co Marian 5.1 SAT-ON Marian is a 100% Centennial hopped dry pale ale. It was first brewed to celebrate the birth of our brewer's first grandson.
Martha's Exchange The Hatchet Job 1.066 6.5 30 FRI-ON
Collaboration Brew with Franklin Brewing of Hyattsville, MD. This malty American dark ale is aged on toasted cherry wood chips. Hints of cherry wood and chocolate intermingle with the rich malts and a complimentary dose of late addition Simcoe hops. We don't know what George did after he cut down that cherry tree, but we would hope it was something like this.
Mayflower Brewing Co. Spring Hop Ale 5.2 WED-ON
"Our first spring seaonal beer, this hoppy red ale has mild bitterness and incredible citrus aroma from four American aroma hops. Like the blooming of spring, it will reawaken your senses. Cheers!" Making its cask debut.
Moat Mountain Moat Golden Ale 4 FRI-ON Dryhopped in the cask and naturally a "live ale". Serving from a wooden cask.
Notch Session Ales 70 Shilling Scottish Ale 1.042 4.1 FRI-ON Scottish 70 Shilling brewed with British pale, crystal and amber malts, and balanced with Willamette and Fuggles hops.
Olde Burnsides Dirty Penny 5.2 Not served Our popular “Dirty Penny Ale” is a hearty, but never heavy black’n’tan” style which is mixture of 60% Ten Penny/40% our own signature stout. This beer is also available year-round at your local bar or favorite beer store.

Paper City Holyoke Dam Ale 5.5 FRI-ON English best bitter dry-hopped with 402 Columbus
People's Pint Provider Pale Ale 1.053 5.2 WED-ON
A delicious pale ale, amber in color with a hoppy nose and touch of bitterness. This beer is brewed with Marris Otter and dark crystal malt. Hopping is a little wacky - we use Target, Cascade, Chinook, Centennial and US Goldings.
Pioneer Brewing Co. Pioneer Red Ale 1.059 5.8 40 Not served An American red ale brewed with west coast hops,and dry hopped with cascade. Starts out with floral notes then is balanced out with a malty finish. I hope you all enjoy this offering. Cheers!
Portsmouth Brewery Whipper Snapper 12P 4 20 THU-ON
An American Mild Ale. This beer features many finishing hops. This provides an aromatic and hop flavor bomb, that is a smooth and easy drinking session ale.
Redhook Ale Brewery Maple Mudslinger Brown Ale 13.7P 5.8 30 SAT-ON Mudslinger is a Nut Brown Ale with a medium body and a fresh aroma. Its malty flavor is layered with light chocolate, caramel, brown sugar and a hint of maple. Six barley malts, two hop varieties, and organic maple syrup result in a well balanced, and surprisingly smooth cask ale.
Run of the Mill Brewpub Alewife Ale 4.8 WED-ON English style Pale Ale. Hopped with Pilgrim, Erg and Fuggle in the boil and finished with Liberty in the cask.
Sebago Brewing Co. Frye's Leap IPA 15P 6.2 55 THU-ON
Many people consider this a hoppy beer; just wait till you taste the balance in the cask version! This beer is light copper in color and offers strong hop flavor and aroma. Frye's Leap IPA is brewed with three malts: two caramel malts create the light copper color while the American 2-Row pale malt creates the fermentable sugars. The fruity hoppiness of the beer comes from extra dry hop conditioning.

Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale 12.5P 5.6 52 WED-ON The original Smuttynose beer! Shoals is all about balance and that's why this beer is so damned drinkable. We've dry-hopped this NERAX-exclusive firkin of our pale ale with three ounces of Citra hops, the first time we've ever used this variety.

TCT Pale Ale 5 FRI-ON This is the standard Pale Ale of the recently re-named Tullycross Tavern.
Wachusett Brewing Co. Black Shack Porter (Oak Aged) 1.054 5.3 45 WED-ON
Black Shack is a flavorful robust porter that is made with over 5 different malts including caramel, biscuit, chocolate, black and flaked oats. These malts create a harmonious layer of flavors that are reminiscent of chocolate mocha and roasted coffee. Black Shack pours a creamy light tan head atop a dark black body. Medium-bodied with a smooth mouthfeel, Black Shack is brewed with 7 hop additions to create a nicely balanced beer. This cask version of Black Shack Porter has been aged on oak for several weeks making this a truly unique offering from the brewers at Wachusett.
